Quartzsite, AZ
to Hemet, CA
May 31 - June 4, 2010
We journeyed west on I-10
through Tucson with its
beautiful skyline and
mountain backdrop. We
stopped for the night at
Quartzsite, AZ. Quartzsite
is legendary among the
wintertime snowbird
campers fleeing from the
cold of the north.
We were the only
transient campers in
the campground as
usual. No need to
call ahead for
reservations here.
These temps probably
contributed to that. We
still can't get used to the
tourist season being
completely opposite of
ours
There is seeming
endless acres of free, or
near free, BLM camping
areas around Quartzsite.
There were a handful of
campers still braving the
elements with no
hook-ups.
The town of Quartzsite
exists to support the
throngs of snowbirds
who invade the area
during the winter. It is
almost a ghost town
this time of year.
"The Pit Stop" is a place
where dry campers can
come to empty and fill
as appropriate. We
imagine that the this
place is busy as a
beehive in the winter.
Governor Arnold had
a welcome station at
the California border.
If all check stations
were so easy- "Got
any fruit?" "No."
"Have a nice day."
We just thought we
had been in the desert.
Southern California's
desert is the driest and
most desolate yet.
Palm Springs is located in a natural wind
tunnel, and the electric utility companies
take advantage of that. We have never seen
as many windmills in our life. There must
have been hundreds of them that stretched
along the road for miles.
Terry's aunt and uncle
arranged for us to stay
in the visitor section of
their mobile home park.
We enjoyed a meal with
Terry's aunt Emily and
uncle Bill at one of their
favorite Mexican
restaurants.
Emily provided us
with an assortment of
lemons, oranges, and
grapefruits from the
trees growing in her
yard.
We were treated to a
visit at the Lazy Daze
motorhome factory in
Pomona (one of the
many suburbs of Los
Angeles.)
This is a prime example
of why one shouldn't
diddle around as the
self-timer on a camera
counts down.
Now this is more like it! Terry,
Martha, Emily, and Bill. We want to
sincerely express our thanks for
the wonderful hospitality shown to
us during our visit.
