Maine and
New Hampshire
This has become a trip
of field repairs. The
pig-tail to the trailer
came loose from the
truck and dragged along
the highway. Not good!
Gerry-rigging time again.
We got back to the U.S.
border at Calais, ME on
Sunday afternoon and
breezed right through
with only a short wait.
Several classic New
England towns dot
the landscape along
Highway 2 in Maine.
We have seen many
instances of the
economic stimulus
package road repair
during our travels.
The beautiful color all
around us made the
road construction
more tolerable.
This is how things
looked when we
arrived in Gorham,
New Hampshire.
The next morning we
awoke to snow and cold!
It was cloudy and snowing for
much of the day, so we just drove
around the area and looked for
snow scenery.
We decided to drive up to Dixville Notch
since we were so close by. This voting
precinct is famous for being the first to
report in during the presidential primary.
All the registered voters meet at midnight
on election day morning to cast their ballot.
Dixville Notch is not
podunk. There is a
world class hotel/resort
located there.
Later during the day, the snow
starting melting and we went to
Jackson and drove through our
first covered bridge.
Martha checks out some
of the fall decorations.
Colors are really
getting dramatic now.
Our next covered bridge
was in Conway, NH
This is typical of the
foliage that we are
seeing now.
The next morning we
had planned to drive
up to Mt. Washington,
but the auto road was
closed because of
the snow.
We stopped at Bartlett,
NH to see another
bridge. This one is
retired and has a gift
shop inside.
The White Mountain National Forest is a showcase
for New Hampshire foliage. These are shots along
Highways 16, 302, and 112.
In one last attempt to see
Mt. Washington, we drove
by the cog railway station.
The clouds had settled over
the mountain and weren't
moving. The temperature
at the top was 12 degrees
with a 50 mph wind. The
mountain was living up to
its reputation.
However, this was the
day that we finally got
to see a moose. This
female appears to be
in poor shape for the
oncoming winter.
Moose truly have a
face that only a
mother could love.
