Hattaras Island
North Carolina Outer Banks
April 2007
We made good use of
the NC Ferry System
while on the Outer
Banks.
This time it was a
short ride across
to Hatteras Island.
We stayed at the
Frisco NPS camp-
ground, and chose a
site sheltered from
the wind.
We were amazed at
how this area looked
more like the semi-arid
West than anything one
would find in North
Carolina.
The Hatteras Lighthouse
is the island's most
recognizable landmark.
The 208 foot light-
house is the tallest
brick lighthouse on
the east coast.
Martha decided to enjoy
this one from the ground.
Climbing this one is
easy if you don't mind
walking around in
circles.
The view from the
top was spectacular.
This photo shows
the path that the
lighthouse was
moved along to its
new site nearly a
half-mile away.
The old site was
literally a few feet from
the ocean.  We would
have loved to see the
lighthouse before it
was moved.
The lighthouse keepers
and their assistants are
memorialized at the
original site.
Hatteras was not to be
outdone by Ocracoke,
so they have "Martha
Jane's Kitchen."
This has to be one of
the most popular
bike riding areas in
the country.  They
were there by the
hundreds.
The windy conditions attract kite
surfers and wind surfers by the
dozens.  We wondered how they
kept from getting tangled up.
