At the Asheville
Airport and ready
to go
Martha's favorite
place after a long
day of traveling.
We found a pleasant
surprise at our Days
Inn at Bozeman.
It didn't take Martha
long to try it out.
We rented a four-wheel
drive Ford Expedition,
and we were ready for
the challenge.
The next morning we
awoke to a dusting
of snow.
We just had to go exploring in this
winter wonderland.  This was just
east of Bozeman.
One of our favorite
drives is along
highway 86 north
of Bozeman.
We traveled east along I-90 and stopped
at the Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield.
The headstones mark where each soldier
was found after the battle.
Martha makes some
photos of the area.
This is a frost in
Montana.
We made our obligatory photos by
the monument on "Last Stand Hill."
We were the only people there
that day!
This is a special site
for American Indians
also.  We found many
prayer clothes and
bundles here.
A monument to the
Indians who perished
in this battle has
been built adjacent
to the Custer
Memorial.
Horses still roam on
parts of the battle-
field that are on the
reservation.  We didn't
realize how big this
battlefield was.  It was
much more than Last
Stand Hill.
We stopped for a late
lunch at the village of
Garryowen.  Our
restaurant also sold
live bait, so we
checked our food
closely for any signs of
movement.
After spending the
night in Sheridan,
WY, our next stop
was Devils Tower.
This is an impressive
site rising out of the
middle of the plain.
Fortunately, there
was no flying
saucer hovering
above it while we
were there.
The weather was
very pleasant while
we were here.
The tower becomes
even more awesome
when looking up from
near the base.
An easy paved trail
surrounds the tower.
Nearby is a prairie
dog town.
The field is pocked with
dens.  There must have
been thousands of the
little critters.
