Beaufort, SC
We camped at Hunting
Island State Park.
Hunting Island is another
of the beautiful South
Carolina state parks.
Wildlife of all types is
abundant. We were told
that deer normally walk
through the campground,
but we didn't see any this
trip.
The Hunting Island
Lighthouse is one of
the main attractions.
The weather was nice
this morning, and the
view was great.
Martha waves as I make
a picture from the top.
We liked Beaufort a lot.
A resident described
Beaufort as, "what
Charleston was 50 years
ago."
The riverfront was very
attractive and inviting.
Martha relaxes in one of
the many swings along the
park-like riverfront.
Randall and April Burch
with their daughter
Camille. They are the
owners of Low Country
Winery on Bay Street in
Beaufort.
April is Martha's cousin.
We enjoyed visiting with
them while in the area.
Low Country Winery is the
only winery in Beaufort.

Our carriage tour
guide, Rose, and her
horse, Duke.
The Rhett House is
where much of the
pre-civil war secession
politics was hatched.
Great southern mansions
dot the map of Beaufort.
Many of these mansions
rival anything seen in
Charleston or Savannah.
Pat Conroy home -
author of The Great
Santini, The Prince
of Tides, The Lords
of Discipline, among
others.
Martha stands at St.
Helena's Episcopal
Church. This church
dates to the early
1700's, and part of this
building was built in
1812.
Prowling through the
old cemeteries is fun.
The "Hanging Tree." Our
guide said that 14 people
have been hung from this
tree.
The bridge across the
Beaufort River was
identified as crossing
the Mississippi in the
movie: Forrest Gump.
The famous "box of
chocolates" in the
movie came from the
Chocolate Tree. We
had to go inside and
get some samples.
We just happened to
be in town in the days
before a big air show.
It was awesome to
watch the Blue Angels
practice as they
streaked by at tree
top level.
Martha shot this picture
as they flew over our car
in a K-Mart parking lot.
The sound was deafening!
Sadly, less than 24 hours
after these pictures were
made, Lt. Cmndr. Kevin
Davis died in a crash during
a maneuver in the show.
We continued our journey
up the coast through
Charleston. We didn't
stay in Charleston this
trip, but this was our first
time to cross the new
Cooper River bridge.
Wow!
